Pool Surrounds and Pool Decks in Oakville

Oakville has more pools per capita than almost any other Halton community, and the pool surround is what makes the backyard usable for the other 22 hours of the day when no one is swimming. We design and build pool decks across Oakville with the right slip-resistant material, drainage planning, and fence integration to meet Halton Region pool bylaws.

Why Oakville Homeowners Hire Us

A pool surround is more than the pavers immediately next to the water. It is the deck, the seating area, the path to the gate, the drainage, and the way the whole back of the lot reads as one space. We scope Oakville pool projects with all of that in mind, not just the strip of pavers around the coping.

Halton Region requires a 4-foot minimum pool fence with a self-closing gate. Material selection has to handle wet feet, sunscreen, chlorine, and the freeze-thaw cycle. We recommend Unilock ArmourCore, Techo-Bloc Blu 60 or Industria Smooth for most pool surrounds because they have a slip-resistant finish, are stocked locally, and individual pavers can be lifted later if the pool needs service.

Pool projects often involve seat walls and elevation changes, grading and drainage away from the pool basin, and backyard landscaping that integrates with the deck. We can scope the surround alone, or combine it with the rest of the backyard build if you are doing a phased project.

Local Considerations & Credentials

  • Credentials: ICPI certified, Landscape Ontario member, authorized Unilock and Techo-Bloc installer, $5M liability, full WSIB. Familiar with Halton Region pool enclosure bylaws and self-closing gate requirements.
  • Site Conditions: Most Oakville pool installs are on clay-rich Halton Till. Pool excavation creates compacted disturbed soil around the pool that needs careful base prep before pavers. Eastlake lakefront properties may need Conservation Halton review if work falls within 30 metres of Lake Ontario.
  • Performance Detail: Cross-slope of 2 percent away from the pool basin, slip-resistant paver finish, polymeric sand specifically rated for pool environments, and either an aluminum edge restraint or a poured concrete bond beam at the coping. Drainage daylighted to a safe location, never to the neighbour.
  • Local Tip: Pool surround installation often happens in the same season as the pool itself. We coordinate with most Oakville pool installers (CGT, Discovery, Solda, etc.) so the pool deck can be installed within 2 to 6 weeks of pool completion. Plan ahead: peak-season installs book out 8 to 16 weeks.

Oakville Pool Surrounds FAQ

A standard Oakville pool surround (600 to 1,000 sq ft of paving around an in-ground pool) using Unilock ArmourCore or Techo-Bloc Blu 60 with proper drainage and edge restraint runs $35,000 to $75,000. Estate-level surrounds with seat walls, fire features, integrated lighting, and premium pavers commonly run $95,000 to $200,000. Pool deck only, fence and pool basin not included.
For pool decks specifically: Unilock ArmourCore, Techo-Bloc Blu 60 Smooth, Industria Smooth, and Para LineaRoc are the four we install most often. They have slip-resistant finishes, hold up to chlorine and salt, and stay cool underfoot in summer. Avoid sealed travertine and polished natural stone for any wet-foot surface; they get slick within 2 to 3 seasons.
The pool itself needs a building permit and pool fence enclosure approval. The surround paving inside the fence does not need a separate permit if it stays at grade. If a seat wall or retaining wall on the surround is over 1 metre exposed height, that wall needs a permit. Halton Region pool bylaw requires the fence to be in place before the pool is filled.
Two layers: the paver surface itself sheds water through the joints, and we set the surround with a 1.5 to 2 percent cross-slope away from the pool basin and away from the house. Where ground slopes back toward the pool we add catch basins and either a French drain or a connection to the existing storm system. We never daylight pool drainage onto a neighbouring property.
A 700 sq ft Oakville pool surround takes 6 to 12 working days: 2 days excavation and grading, 1 to 2 days base install and compaction, 3 to 5 days paving, 1 to 2 days polymeric sand, edge restraint, and finish. Larger surrounds with seat walls, lighting, and outdoor kitchen prep run 3 to 6 weeks.
Yes, we do this often, especially in Eastlake and Joshua Creek where many homes have an existing rear patio that needs to be extended around a new pool. Where pavers can match, we extend cleanly. Where the existing patio uses an older or discontinued line, we use a complementary material with a clean transition zone or seat wall as the divider.
